And the winner is #21 – Heather! A big THANK YOU to each of you who entered our giveaway! I encourage you to check out Beeyoutiful, and let me know what you think! 🙂

3 Ways to Love Mineral Makeup

Psssst… Can I tell you something? I’ve been on a mission recently… A mission to gradually replace my old beauty products with ones that are more natural. Have you ever looked up the details of what is in our cosmetics? Yikes! It’s pretty scary! Even though I want to turn to more natural products, I don’t want to give quality or appearance. There’s a reason I wear makeup! *wink*

And that is why I couldn’t be more excited to share my latest discovery with you! Eeeeeeek!

Tinted moisturizer had been my go-to “foundation” for years now. I started out with Cover Girl, then eventually switched to Aveeno thinking that would be more natural – but it would sting and make my eyes water even when I lightly applied it to my face. That can’t be a good sign. Then I tried a pricier tinted moisturizer, but it really wasn’t anything to get excited about. I was still using it every day when I read this article by my friend Rosanna which introduced me to Beeyoutiful Mineral Makeup:

She asked me if I would like to try a sample foundation kit from Beeyoutiful Mineral Makeup to review here on the blog, and of course I said yes! Rosanna is a busy wife and mom just like me – but she’s gorgeous, talented, and always looks amazing! I knew that I couldn’t go wrong in trusting her advice. Even though I still wasn’t sure that mineral makeup would work for me, I was willing to give it a shot!

I’m more of a medium tone, so they sent me an adorable fuchsia gift bag with EIGHT different shades of medium foundation to choose from and sample! EIGHT! And a small kabuki brush! One of the reasons that I’ve relied on tinted moisturizer for the last few years is because I’ve always had a rough time finding just the right shade of foundation to match my olive-ish skin – but Beeyoutiful was different.

(Ooops! I forgot to snag a photo of all eight samples… These were the remaining six shades that came with the sample package.)

Beeyoutiful Makeup Samples

I carefully watched Rosanna’s video on how to find your perfect match. There were so many shades that came in my sample package – but I chose the two that seemed like they might be the better matches, and I gave it a whirl. I was surprised to see that both shades matched pretty well! I ended up choosing the slightly darker shade because we were going into warmer months and my skin tans pretty easily when I’m outside in the summer.

Rosanna helped me put in my order – and a few days later this pretty package arrived in the mail!

Mineral Makeup

Once again, I followed along with the next video as Rosanna demonstrated how to use a kabuki brush to apply the mineral foundation. I loved that she also shows two other ways that we can apply the makeup. I had fun playing around with the different techniques, and over the next few days I tried all three!

Dry Brushing ~

First I tried the regular dry buffing method. Before trying mineral makeup, I had assumed that it would feel caked on, dry, and just gross, so I was surprised to see that it wasn’t any of those things! It felt light and fluffy – almost as if I wasn’t wearing makeup at all!

Blending with a Moisturizer ~

Next I used a drug store moisturizer to blend with the mineral powder – and it was another great look! This created a little more coverage, so I will use this for a more dressed up, nighttime look. Even though my freckles weren’t as visible with this approach, I still didn’t feel like I was wearing heavy makeup. Oh, happy day!

Airbrush Technique ~

This one is my favorite, and is now my go-to way to apply makeup each morning! I ran to Target and found NYX’s Dewy Finish Setting Spray to try. I look how it turned out! I like this look so much that I’m eyeing Beeyoutiful’s Lavishmint Hydrating Toner for when I run out – just like Rosanna uses in the video.

I love how this method evens out my complexion, but still light enough to show my freckles! I feel natural, as if I’m not wearing anything on my face – without scaring my friends and family!

Just 1??? LOL. I never leave home without eyebrow pencil or mascara…in fact I carry it in my purse in case I do forget! The joys of having super light eyelashes… lol I have been looking at switching up my makeup!

  • Catherine Griffice says:

I cannot live without my eyebrow powder….I am using Anastasia now but would love to have an organic powder to use…..

    • ginger says:

Oooh! I’ve heard so much about Anastasia, but have never tried it. Thanks so much for entering our giveaway!

  • Jennifer H says:

Hi, thanks for hosting this give away. Honestly, I really don’t wear makeup because I don’t like the caked on feeling, etc, but I’ve been really wanting to try giving it another go. I’m forty this year and my very light complexion could use some even-ing out. I’d love to try this product.

    • ginger says:

Hi Jennifer! I am SO glad you entered the giveaway! I was truly impressed by Beeyoutiful’s light and airy feeling. I’ve never tried other mineral powders, but I don’t think I need to now! 🙂 Good luck!!!

  • Amanda says:

Eyeliner is my favorite make up! 🙂

  • Ashley Perez says:

I would love to win! I can’t live without my lipstick 🙂

  • Andy Rose says:

I have never tried mineral makeup.
    Thank you.

  • Jes says:

    Great post!

My answer to your question is a toss up between foundation and mascara. If I had to choose….probably my mascara.

  • Rebekah Giannatala says:

I’ve been doing the same with the natural makeup! I haven’t been very successful with finding a good way to apply the mineral foundation powder. I’d love to try the airbrush technique! That sounds like fun! I’d say mascara is my must-have makeup item. Thanks for sharing this!!

    • ginger says:

Thank you so much for joining our giveaway! Which brand of mascara do you use? You have great lashes! 🙂

  • I don’t leave my house without an entire makeup bag FULL of makeup options but if I had to choose just one it would probably be mascara, wait I mean blush, or maybe lipstick… ugh that’s a tough one! I have tried the tinted moisturizer but sometimes feel it isn’t enough coverage for my age, 47. Here’s the thing, part of my face is still oily (like a teenager) and I have to continually apply powder but then there are the “mature” parts that the powder seems to accentuate every line 🙁
I was just researching mineral makeup today would love to test it out! 🙂

    • Rosanna says:

Lanette, I really hope you get a chance to try out our foundation, it’s really a unique experience! You can definitely mix application methods… It works great with oily skin when applied dry, and if you have areas that need extra moisture, try applying it mixed with your moisturizer; that way it won’t accentuate the fine lines as much.

    • ginger says:

Haha! Sometimes it’s hard to choose! I am so glad that you entered our giveaway! I’d encourage you to try Beeyoutiful – You just might love it!

  • Celeste says:

After using a topical antibiotic for acne during high school and college, I’ve been trying to switch to non-toxic beauty and hygiene products. My favorite is a facial toner made of witch hazel, essential oils, and apple cider vinegar, and green tea. It’s made a big difference in the acne and is completely safe! Love reading your blog; it’s an encouragement!

    • ginger says:

Oh wow! Hi, Celeste! I am so thrilled that you stopped by my little corner of the world! Your facial toner sounds amazing – and I’m so glad it’s making a difference!

  • Joy Andrews says:

I love mineral makeup!! I have my normal, everyday makeup that consists of everything and my “no makeup” makeup that is just some finishing powder, blush, and mascara. It’s just enough to make me look not dead for those days when I’m in a hurry!

I would love to win and try this brand!

    • ginger says:

Hi Joy! I’m so thrilled that you entered our giveaway! I love a little blush and mascara for those days when I can’t do up my whole face! 🙂

  • Rhoda Hilty says:

I’m not one to wear a lot of makeup. It seems as though the ones I’ve tried are either horrible for you, or they don’t really do much. I’d love to be proven wrong, and find something that works and isn’t destroying me. Lol. My go to makeup right now is mascara made from egg yolks and charcoal.(with a drop of lavender oil) Sounds disgusting, but it actually works quite well. But of course it needs to be refrigerated, and only lasts for a week or two. So you can see the down side to it. 🙂

    • ginger says:

Hi Rhoda! I would love to know more about your mascara! Do you have a link or recipe that you follow? I’m really curious!! 🙂

  • Alison says:

I never leave home without mascara. Mary Kay mascara is the best. I was thinking about selling Mary Kay just so that I can get their mascara and make up remover. Love those!!

  • Mandi says:

I hardly wear any makeup, so I’d have to say lip balm or lip gloss. I’ve been looking into mineral makeup lately, but I don’t feel like I have the skills to apply it properly :/

    • Rosanna says:

Mandi, check out the videos that Ginger linked to! It’s not that hard to apply, once you see the technique in action… it’s basically just buffing 🙂 I find it to be much easier/quicker and more foolproof than liquid foundation.

    • ginger says:

Hi Mandi! I am the clumsiest, most non-graceful person you could ever meet. I wasn’t sure if I could figure out how to apply it either – but I’m telling you that it’s a breeze! If I can do it, anyone can do it! 🙂

  • Diane says:

My favorite product is Revlon foundation, but I would be interested in trying mineral foundation. Thanks for offering this giveaway!

  • callie blue says:

All else can be dust in the wind but I am an eye make up girl so I need my shadow and a mascara with a great wand!

  • Melany says:

I can’t get by without my mascara. Without it I look half dead and would scare small children. But my skin would insist I need moisturizer.

    • ginger says:

Haha! Lots of girls are loving their mascara! I have to use moisturizer, too, or my skin feels like it will crack open! Yikes! 🙂

  • Christie says:

I really like eye shadow. It’s fun to try new colors!

    • ginger says:

Hi Christie! I’m so thrilled that you stopped by! I’m pretty new to trying out new eye shadow colors. It’s fun to change it up a little! 🙂

  • Amy P says:

Oh, I would love to try this! I have freckles too and I don’t want to cover them up with heavy makeup. I haven’t been able to find anything that feels natural. My favorite thing would have to be mascara, but I do love eyeliner too!

  • Ruth says:

Mascara for sure! I’ve been using Lights, Camera, Lashes! by Tarte. But I would hate to have just one make-up item — just saying! =)

  • Heather says:

I feel like my answer to this is pretty obvious. But I absolutely CAN NOT leave the house without lipstick. My favorite is Red Velvet by Besame. I just got another tube because I’m just about through the first one.

  • Katrina says:

I am soooo not a make-up gal… beeswax chapstick is about the extent of it for me! However – I am feeling like maybe I need to freshen up my look a bit, which is why this appeals to me! If I’m going to start using something, I want it to be something of quality.

  • Abigail simpson says:

    I love my mascara!!

  • Myra says:

Foundation for my uneven skin tone is my must have.

  • Linda says:

It would have to be lipstick…with eyebrow pencil/powder as a close second. I have used Ulta brand lipstick for several years, usually in wine/russet shades – it’s not very expensive, but is very moisturizing and works well for me. As for the eyebrow pencil, I have very thin eyebrows due to low thyroid. It’s embarrassing to me to be seen without penciling in some (hopefully) more natural looking eyebrows. I have tried mineral makeup before, and really like the light coverage it gives. But it sounds like the Beeyoutiful sample kit would really be helpful to get just the right shade.

  • Kaitlin says:

Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway!
I have been trying to switch all my makeup over to healthier products too, and I am always excited to try out a new brand!
Honestly if I were stuck on a desert island my must have item would be mascara! I use Mineral Fusion’s lash building mascara in Rock. I have been meaning to try Physician’s Formula though too which is a bit cheaper.
Here is my favorite website for checking the toxicity of all drugstore makeup brands etc:
They have natural products on there too like Burt’s Bees, but they always give you the full low down on what is in everything!
    God bless,
