What I'm Into ~ May 2014 Edition

Can I let you in on a little secret? I have been dreading this post. Please understand, the What I’m Into post is usually my favorite each month. I love sharing a recap of our family’s month and reading all of the other links – getting movie and book recommendations, catching up on happenings of my blogging buddies…but I’ve been dragging my feet this month. I guess it’s my way of avoiding the fact that my husband is deploying next week. I’m an avoider, very much a Type 9 for all of you Enneagram lovers out there.

As I worked on this post, I was surprised to see my enthusiasm grow! I love our little community here – and sharing about the past month actually helped to boost my spirits! A big thank you to each of you for spending a little bit of your day with me!

Be sure to fix yourself a cool glass of lemonade, curl up for a few minutes, and check out the other great blogs linking up with Leigh Kramer and her awesome series – What I’m Into!

Family Time ~

We surprised the boys by taking them to Kansas City last weekend. We drove up to Worlds of Fun, and joined our daredevils on their very first roller coaster rides! Joe took advantage of his keen throwing arm and won an armful of stuffed animals and basketballs for our little guys! We stayed until they closed the park at 10pm, and everyone had a blast!

The next day we made even more little dreams come true by taking the boys to Legoland!

We ate at Union Station, we visited an amazing exhibit about King Tut’s treasures, celebrated Quinn’s birthday a little early at The Cheesecake Factory, and had a great time exploring Science City!

We heard several times throughout the weekend, “This is the best day of my life!!!” We couldn’t have asked for a better pre-deployment family getaway! So many sweet memories were made – and I will be forever grateful for this precious time with all of my guys!

It’s Here! It’s Here!

My Beloved surprised me for my birthday last month with this beauty! It couldn’t be delivered until May, but I was so thrilled that I didn’t mind waiting at all!

It was delivered on a Saturday morning, and it took 7 strong guys to get it up the stairs into the area off of our living room! We let it acclimate to our house, and then it was tuned by a master musician two weeks later. The boys and I loved watching Dr. Howard care for our piano! Quinn was even able to “help” a little!

I love listening to Joe play Moonlight Sonata for me! *romantic sigh*

I can’t wait to tackle this room as part of my deployment projects. I have a few things planned to finish up the piano room area, and I can’t wait to share them with you!

Fashion ~

I wore workout clothes quite a bit this month, but here’s a little round-up of some of the easy, kid-friendly, bargain outfits that I sported this month…

What I Read in May ~

The Duke’s Obsession, by Frances Fowlkes – I am incredibly proud of my talented friend who wrote this book! It was a beautiful story, and I can’t wait to read the other books that Fran has in the works!

The Cuckoo’s Calling, by Robert Galbraith – I never would have guessed in a million years that the author was really J.K. Rowling! It was a fun read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series soon!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling – I’ve shared before that I have a goal of re-reading at least one book each month – an old favorite from the past. This month the boys and I read the first Harry Potter book together. We listened to it in the car, we read it aloud at home, and we loved it! My oldest is almost finished with the second book, so I need to hurry and catch up with the little guys. I have only read the first three Harry Potter books, but I think that I’ll read them alongside the boys.

Reading Like a Writer, by Francine Prose – Doesn’t she have the most fantastic name for a writer? Love it! I really enjoyed this book. She takes the readers on a journey through classic pieces of literature, and helps us to view them in a whole new light. I will definitely take what I have learned with me as I read this summer!

Reading in June ~

The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd – I’ve heard so much about this author’s wonderful books! I only have this book for (less than) two weeks from the library, so I need to get a move on!

11/22/63, by Stephen King – I officially became a Stephen King fan when I read his book On Writing. I’m not big into horror, so having never ventured into this other works, I thought that this would be a good place to start.

Top Secret Twenty-One, by Janet Evanovich – I love the continuing story of bounty hunter Stephanie Plum! Which cars will she blow up this time? Morelli or Ranger? What hilarious antics will Grandma Moser get into this time? Literary dessert,  these books are so much fun!

Again, I’m not entirely sure which book I will re-read this month, but I’m sure that I’ll pick up the perfect old friend at some point this month!

Screen Time ~

My Beloved and I went to see Divergent and Captain America this month. I finished up the last season of Mad Men, so now I will be catching up on the current shenanigans of the Draper family.

Our boys can’t wait to see Maleficent – so we might try to sneak that in very soon.

I’m looking forward to bawling my way through the movie The Fault in Our Stars next weekend! It’ll be my first weekend without my Beloved and my boys this summer, but my favorite Tribalwoman is coming to town! She just got back from a long trip home to New Zealand, so we’ll get to have much-needed girl time!

Coming up ~

I’ll be kissing my Beloved goodbye this next week. The boys and I will settle into our new deployment routine – full of swimming lessons, playdates, projects, and more. I’m sure that my phone will be permanently plastered to my hand – so we don’t miss any calls. I am hoping to use this time to continue getting stronger and healthier. I want to be the best wife and mother that I can be – so I’ll be continuing our Happier, Healthier You series here on the blog where I share my goals for the week. I hope that you’ll join me!

I would love to stay in touch! You can find me on Facebook, Instagram, & Pinterest. It’s also super easy to receive my posts by email – just go to the Follow by Email area below my picture on the right. Each new person that subscribes, likes, and follows makes me do the happy Snoopy dance!

Wishing you a fabulous month of June!

  • Taking your boys on a roller coaster sounds like too much fun. I have two little boys, and I can only imagine their sheer delight when they get to be scared to death like that! Love and prayers as your husband deploys.

  • Happy May! I’m glad you had such a good time in KC, you guys needed to make some awesome memories before deployment. You are going to have such a great time reading Harry Potter along with your boys! Gosh, I’m almost jealous that you’ll get to experience those books for the first time. They are good to re-read but nothing like the first time when you get to watch the plot unfolding.

  • Amy E Patton says:

You WILL love Invention. Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorite books. Her second book was Horrible, so I was worried about Invention, but it quickly proved to be another beautiful heart inspiring book.

  • Leigh Kramer says:

I can’t believe your husband deploys next week! I’ll keep him and you in my prayers. Glad y’all had such a nice getaway. What a beautiful piano! So glad you enjoyed The Cuckoo’s Calling- I can’t wait to read the follow up in a couple of weeks!
