Week #12 ~ A Happier, Healthier You

A Happier Healthier You - justoneoftheboys.com

I’m so excited to be back with you this week! How are you doing? Are you finding little ways to take care of yourself? To challenge yourself?

I shared with you last week how taking it easy on myself was huge in helping my back to get better. This week I want to let you in on a little secret – It’s my birthday. I had a wonderful time this weekend loving on my family, and being loved on in return. We kicked off the weekend by meeting up with friends at a local botanical garden. We had such a great time strolling in the sunshine, chatting, and playing with friends!

Week 12 d

I spent most of Saturday in the kitchen, making carnitas for tacos, and my first attempt at a Pavlova for my birthday dessert. Normally, I’m not a big fan of cooking. I enjoy eating good food, so I put up with the cooking – but it was so enjoyable to spend the time making something that I actually wanted to make!

Setting the table for Taco Night ~

Week 12 g

My (cracked) first attempt at this delicious meringue dessert from New Zealand, it is topped with a cream cheese whipped cream, kiwi fruits, and berries. Can’t wait to make another!

Week 12 h

Week #12 ~ A Happier, Healthier You

I had such a wonderful weekend with all of my guys! My Beloved has more pre-deployment responsibilities going on today, so he’s not able to be with us, but he spoiled me over the weekend! He gave me a beautiful potted orchid plant (my favorite!), a gift card to a fabulous consignment/boutique store, and very special surprise! I still can’t believe it myself, and I’m excited to show it to you when it’s delivered!!! I hope that you’ll stay tuned!

I know that this sounds like a broken record, but I really want to take better care of myself this year. It’s time to put caring for myself on the to-do list, and I know that I’ll be a better wife, mother, and friend because of it! I can already see the glimmer of hope!

To wonderful coming year!

Last Week’s Goals ~

  • Drink at least 64oz. of water each day. I still missed two days, but I hit my goal for the other days this week.
  • Continue to take my vitamins every morning.
  • Spritz on a little perfume to feel and smell prettyI’ve shown you this picture of my perfume before…

But I wanted to show you my birthday present from my dad – Honey, by Marc Jacobs. I love this perfume! It’s not too sweet, not too floral, not to spicy – just right! It wasn’t hard to remember to spritz on a little each day.

Week 12 b

  • Use the foam roller on my backI’ve used it almost every day, and it feels really good to roll out some of those kinks!
  • Make my next doctor’s appointment for my backI’m going for a follow-up appointment this week.
  • Care for my hands and nailsI found a new shade of polish that I can’t wait to try – Essie’s Naughty Nautical.
  • Exercise at least 3 times this weekI worked out twice at the gym this week and went for one run. My run was tough, discouraging, and made me doubt why I began running again in the first place. Have you ever felt this way about something? How did you make it through the rough patch? I’d love your advice!
  • Keep writing Chapter 11 of Our Story to share on the blog.
  • Do at least two of the activities on the list of things that I used to enjoy as a child.

Make a list of what you enjoyed when you were a child

Last week I wrote out a list of some of the things that I enjoyed doing as a child. The boys and I started putting together a puzzle. I have always loved working on jigsaw puzzles, but I rarely set aside the time to work on them anymore. It’s relaxing, challenging, and so much fun!

I also played the piano, went running, listened to Pandora, and revisited an old literary friend – Anne of Green Gables. I’m really enjoying connecting with the old me – and rediscovering my old loves.

Week 12 a

  • Curl up with a book in bed or on the Story Chair by 2200 each night. I was up late a couple nights last week – stuffing Easter eggs on Saturday evening. This is my Story Chair. I began calling it that when the boys and I would curl up on it and read library books every morning when they were little. It was a hideous print when I bought it several years ago, (long story), but my favorite Tribalwoman recovered it for me in this beautiful red suede. Even after all this time, it’s still my favorite place to read, have a cup of tea, snuggle with guys – and even write this blog post!

Week 12 c

This Week’s Goals ~

  • Drink at least 64 oz. of water each day.
  • Take my vitamins every morning.
  • Sign up to take an improv class this summer
  • See the doctor about my back
  • Don’t be so hard on myself – find ways to give myself a little grace. Write out some of the encouraging things that I tell my boys, and start telling them to myself.
  • Care for my hands and nails.
  • Continue doing things on my list of activities that I’ve always loved.
  • Exercise at least three times.
  • Get back to researching and writing more of my side project.
  • Curl up in bed or on the Story Chair by 2200 most nights.

I would love to keep in touch this week as we work together to take better care of ourselves! You can find me on Facebook and  Instagram, and don’t forget to check out our Pinterest group board ~ Taking Care of Ourselves!

  • Happy Birthday! I totally know what you mean about trying to get back into running. It’s hard! I started using the couch to 5k guide because it gave me specifics to aim for each day and it starts you off nice and easy. It was a lot easier for me to run for one minute, walk for two, than to just try to go all out.

You are such a kindred spirit. 🙂 We went to the Botanical Gardens this weekend too and I’ve also started doing puzzles. How I love them. 🙂 I’m so glad you’ve found some relief for your back. That is wonderful! I’m on Day 18 of exercising every day and it feels really good. I don’t SEE any improvement but I feel so much better. 🙂 Happiest of Birthdays to you!!!

  • I am totally treating myself to some new nail polish soon, I’ve been following a detox diet (no wheat, no sugar, no meat) for a week and I’ve done so well! My other self-care thing that I need to be a little better about is doing my PT exercises. They involve a lot of deep breaths so I’m trying to think of it as meditation, too! =)

  • That dessert looks amazing!

  • […] My birthday was this month, and I had a wonderful time celebrating with my family! I made my very first Pavlova as my birthday dessert, and even though it cracked in the oven, it was scrumptious! […]
