Ask Away Friday

Today I am super excited to share with you a new kind of post! I am still very new to the blogging world, but I have loved getting to “meet” new friends along the way!

Today I’d like for you to meet Sarah from Beauty School Dropout. She’s an attorney, pastor’s wife, mom of two boys, a knitter, a runner, and so much more! Sarah sent me 10 questions (in bold – below) for me to answer here (in italics – below) in my little corner of the world, and I hope that you’ll check out the questions that I sent her way! Let’s get to know each other a little better, shall we? ~ Love, G

1.  You’re a mom of boys, like me, but yours are a little older than mine.  Do you have any advice for people just learning how to be a boy-mom?  (I didn’t have any brothers growing up so this is all new for me!)

I grew up with three brothers and a sister. Boys were nothing new to me, but being a boy-mom is a horse of a different color! My best advice would be to buckle up, be surprised at nothing, and soak in all of the boyish goodness! There’s just something about a bond between a mommy and her little boy. Oh, and be careful when checking the pockets of jeans at laundry time – you never know what icky bugs and boy treasures you’re going to find!

2.  You’re from Kansas, I’m from Missouri. Can we still be friends?

Haha! Sure, we can be friends – especially since we’re no longer in the same NCAA conference! *wink* I’ll miss the Jayhawk/Tiger basketball border wars!

3.  What’s your favorite meal to cook for your family? (or do you hate to cook?)

While I don’t hate to cook, it’s not one of my favorite things either. I do love to eat yummy food, so I’ll endure the cooking to get there! One of my favorite meals to cook is a delicious Cowboy Skillet that I discovered on Pinterest. It’s easy, filling, and everyone will eat it! I’m also a huge fan of making kale chips or roasted Brussels sprouts. *drool*

4.  I know you love to read — what book(s) are you recommending these days?

I’m still recommending my very favorite book of 2013 to anyone who asks – Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes. Loved it! Other recent favorites are Bread & Wine, by Shanua Niequist and The Reason I Jump, by Naoki Higashida. As a voracious reader, I can’t wait to discover new books this year!

5. Your husband is in the military, but I don’t know what you do!  What’s your work situation?

I don’t work outside the home right now. I homeschool our youngest two sons, (2nd grade and Kindergarten), while this is the first year that our 4th grader has attended a public school. It’s a transition year for all of us – but we’re having a pretty good year so far! Solar systems have been built, wars have been studied, phonics has been learned – homeschooling is so much work, but I love it! I love watching them learn, and I love the memories that we have created over the years!

6. Do you really have a pair of bright blue high heels, or is that a photoshop trick?  Either way — they’re very cute!

I really do have a pair of bright blue shoes! They are my absolute favorite – but I only bring them out for special occasions. They were my wedding shoes when I married my Beloved…

7. Obligatory midwesterner weather question: What do you think about this cold & snowy winter?  What’s your favorite season?

I like the idea of snow, but I’m not a fan of the ice, wind, and freezing temps that come along with it. My favorite season is autumn – I love wearing boots, watching the leaves change colors, and having that first slight chill in the air! Perfect curl up with a book and apple cider weather!

8. What’s your favorite social media and why?

I enjoy Facebook and Pinterest the most. I love keeping up with friends and family across the globe on Facebook! Pinterest is pretty much the first place I turn to when I want to find something – recipes, lesson plans, paint colors, gift ideas, and ways to revamp a tired wardrobe!

9.  I’m currently trying to figure out where to go on summer vacation with my family — what are your favorite vacation spots with little kids/babies?

Hmmm…We loved getting to visit the Monterey Bay area in California! Beautiful beaches, a fantastic aquarium, lot of things for kiddos to do, and very close to San Francisco! We have really only taken trips to visit family, so our other destination has been Austin, TX. Great food, awesome music, loads of kid-friendly activities, and did I mention the food? *wink* Of course, you could always come to Kansas to visit us!

10. What’s your favorite thing about where you grew up?  (and where was that?)

Other than the year that I lived in Moscow, Russia, I have always lived here in Kansas. My very favorite things about living in Kansas, (aside from most of my family being here), are the thunderstorms and the sunsets. The storms are so powerful, so loud, and so….majestic. I love them! One thing that Kansas doesn’t have going for it is that it’s so flat – but that does allow us to have the most amazing views of the sunrises and sunsets. We pretty much have nothing to obstruct our views of the gorgeous heavenly artwork.

~ Sarah and I are linking up with The Real Housewife of Caroline County today. Hop on over to get to know some more blogging friends!

Thank you so much, Sarah, for the wonderful questions! Now I’m going to hop over to your blog to learn more about you!

  • Even I will have to admit – your Kansas sunsets are gorgeous. I read Bread & Wine and Me Before You in 2013 too, and really loved both, so I’m excited to check out The Reason I Jump! And that Cowboy Skillet?! Thanks for swapping questions with me! This was really fun.

    • ginger says:

Yes, please do try the Cowboy Skillet – it’s to die for! I make it at least once a week! This was so much fun – what a great way to get to know new blogging friends better! 🙂

  • What a fun set of questions! That sunset is really gorgeous-I was just talking to someone about how much prettier the Oklahoma sunrise/sunsets have been lately and I think that one has us beat!

  • Shana Norris says:

I just started Me Before You last night. The prologue was a little creepy, but I still have high hopes, as it comes highly recommended. And I’ll admit to getting weirded out way too easily!

I had two girls, then a boy and wow – boys are REALLY different. Ironically, my boys is probably my sweetest, most sensitive child. I don’t know – he might tie his oldest sister in the sweetest contest but he’s by far the most sensitive. My youngest daughter is all force and energy and power and aggression, but boys just have their own very unique sort of energy.

    • ginger says:

Hiya Shana! I am so happy that you stopped by! I hope that you come to enjoy Me Before You – but I know that it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. 🙂 It’s a book that stayed with me long after I read it – in fact, I want to re-read it this year. I was upset with the author for not ending it how *I* wanted it to end – but it was very thought-provoking! I hope you’ll let me know what you think!
Wow – a boy after two girls – that would be a change! We boy-moms need to stick together! 🙂

  • Tammy Lonker says:

How fun!!! Loved learning the things I didn’t know! 🙂

  • I have boys! And you’re exactly right…you NEVER know what you’re going to find in the pockets of their jeans. I’m sometimes scared to stick my hand in there! 🙂

    • ginger says:

Hiya, Bold Fab Mom! Yay! I love “meeting” new blogging and boy-mom friends! I am so happy that you stopped by today! Yes – searching pockets is an adventure all in itself!

  • So awesome to meet another midwestern girl! I am in Illinois, though, please don’t hold that against me! LOL! I loved the answer to number 1, but the funniest part about that is that those are the things that I get out of my daughter and not my two boys! LOL! Kids are the craziest little monsters! Have a great week!

    • ginger says:

Yay! It’s so nice to meet another boy-mom and mid-western girl! Guess if we have a girl, I’ll need to be wary of her pockets as well! 😉 Thank you so much for stopping by – your comment made my day! Hope you have a great week as well!

  • Mark Allman says:

I enjoyed learning more about you and your family.

  • I love those beautiful blue high heels even though I couldn’t wear them. I am not a huge fan of high heals because I have back issues. 😉

    • ginger says:

Hiya Christy! I am so happy that you stopped by! I am so glad that you like my shoes – they are so pretty, but I’ll let you in on a little secret…they are so uncomfortable! That skinny heal is hard to be on for long periods of time. I am recovering from having hip surgery in October, so I haven’t worn them in quite a while, but I sure do enjoy when they are on my feet!
