My wonderful friend’s brother, someone that I had heard so much about over the years, but had never even met, was defending my freedom over the beautiful mountains of Afghanistan. This was the latest in a long line of deployments – six months away from home.

Surrounded by the breathtaking mountains and the desolate plains of war-torn Afghanistan, this real-life G.I. Joe was anxious to get back to his home. Even from the other side of the world, 7,000 miles away, he knew that something was very wrong.

Neither one of us could even begin to imagine how the devastating heartbreak that we would both experience would eventually lead us to healing, new beginnings, and each other…
